Western New Mexico University recently hosted The 10th annual International Forum on Local Sustainable Development, which had 30 students, faculty and staff members from UNIVA, a catholic university in Mexico. The forum is held to help promote sustainable social justice through institutional collaboration, equitable policies, and available resources for at-risk populations. Members from UNIVA were given the opportunity to tour county offices, the detention center and the WNMU Police Academy and hear from county and city officials. The forum provided individuals an opportunity for comprehensive discussion and included local and international exchange of ideas to help advance social injustice and to implement policies at the community level.
Firefighter/Paramedic Colton Allen was recently honored by the Animas Fire and Rescue Department. Mr. Allen not only is a volunteer with the Animas Fire Department, he is also a Lieutenant Paramedic with the Town of Silver City and a PRN Paramedic with Gila Regional EMS. Colton has been with the Animas Department for 9 years and was recognized for his hard work and dedication to the Fire Department and community. Congratulations and thank you for all you do to help the community.
The Silver City Church of Christ will be having a community give-away on Saturday, August 12th. They will be giving away household items and clothing for men, women and children. This event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the church and all are welcome to attend.
Congratulations to El Refugio Inc. Shelter Assistant and Advocate, Elisa Chacon who was recently named “Advocate of the Month” by The New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Ms. Chacon has been with the El Refugio shelter in Silver City for 10 years and helps support shelter residents through case management, life and social skills and by ensuring a clean, safe and cooperative environment. She also dedicates herself to helping people who are victims of domestic violence, oppressed and living in poverty.
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is having a New Mexico Trout and Bass challenge to help promote bass and trout fishing opportunities in New Mexico. This will give anglers the chance to discover new fishing waters while trying to catch all the species that are found throughout New Mexico. Winners will receive a certificate and challenge coin.
