Grant County Sheriff deputies and Silver City Police officers were called to the Lintero Apartments on Saturday night in reference to a shooting. Witness accounts refer to seeing the victim, Bryson McNeill, being beaten my three suspects an hour before the shooting occurred. McNeill was treated for his wounds at the scene and was transported to Gila Regional Medical Center. The incident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to CrimeStoppers at 575-538-5254.
John P. Sterle, Commander of American Legion Allingham-Golding Post #18 in Silver City, served as a senior counselor during the 2019 New Mexico Boys State Session held at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Commander Sterle, was responsible for the supervision and coordination of eight high school juniors from around the state who volunteered in providing food service to all the Boys State staff and Delegates during the 6-day session. In addition, the boys completed duties and requirements that make up the American Legion Governmental Education Program.
The Deming Health Career Academy summer camp is about to begin for high school students what are interested in the medical field. Students can earn dual credit through Western New Mexico University by attending the camp that will feature hands on activities, tours of medical facilities, and volunteer opportunities. Crews from the Youth Conservation Corps will be working outdoors in Santa Clara and Fort Bayard this summer by providing needed improvements and maintenance to the area. The state-funded program hires youth from age 14 to 25 that work on specific projects in the community that include building walk paths, painting, clearing brush, and repairing public structures. This year the groups will include prepping and painting buildings at Fort Bayard.
