There is a fire warning for Southwest New Mexico, due to the possibility of dry lightning later today and anticipated high winds on Saturday. According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, an upper level disturbance in Colorado will lead to the high winds and dry conditions will return to the area Saturday afternoon after a brief influx of moisture today.
US Senator Martin Heinrich remarked on the importance of the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Act. For the first time in US history, the total amount of student loan debt is higher than the amount of credit card debt. The Emergency Loan Act would allow those with outstanding student loan debt to refinance at the lower interest rates offered to new borrowers.
State Senator Howie Morales is back in Southwest New Mexico after losing his bid for Governor in the 2014 Primary Elections last week. Morales said that he is ready to focus his energies once more on representing Grant County as a state senator, a position he will hold until 2016.
Freeport-McMoran recently donated $7,500 to Kids In Need of Supportive Services, or the KISS Program. Each summer, underprivileged children and family members are taken to various events around town, such as lunch in the park, swimming, reading programs at the library, and occasional out-of-town field trips. The Gospel Mission also works with the KISS program to help make Silver City a better place to raise kids.
