Here’s a look at today’s local news:
Silver City’s Gough Park was the venue for the 11th Annual “Jump Into Summer” family event hosted by Hidalgo Medical Services last Saturday. The event, created to promote health and wellness in a fun, family friendly atmosphere, was enjoyed by hundreds of local residents. Many agencies and non-profits set up booths providing information and resources in addition to physical activity games and challenges. Music was provided by a D.J and there were drawings for six bicycles. It is estimated at least 600 visitors attend the event.
Deming Luna County Mainstreet Board Director, Jesse Kriegel, will be creating a wall mural to be painted on the south wall of the old Radio Shack building facing Leyendecker Plaza in downtown Deming. Kriegel is a talented artist, Deming Public school art teacher, and well known for his depictions of ancient Mimbres pottery designs. The images in the mural will be traditional from actual bowl designs and will honor the culture and spirit of the ancient Mimbres people.
The Spring Fire that started on June 5th and located in Adobe Canyon, Black Range Ranger District in Catron County, has been 100% contained. The fire encompassed 3556 acres of land and was caused by lightning. The Elk Fire that started on June 6th and located southeast of Mangas Mountain in the Quemado Ranger District, Catron County, is now 48% at the time of this report and has covered 660 acres. The Elk fire remains entirely on National Forest System lands approximately 23 miles southeast of Quemado and is burning in remote and rugged terrain.
The Bayard City Council has approved a joint powers agreement regarding usage of the dispatch system. The JPA will include the following partners: Silver City, Grant County, Bayard, Santa Clara, Hurley, and Western New Mexico University. Since Gila Regional Medical Center is not a partner at this time, Bayard will contribute 6% instead of 5%. The council approved the JPA agreement with the stipulation that they are billed on a quarterly basis and can speak with dispatch board members if there is a contribution increase.
