WNMU recently awarded a four-year scholarship to Faith Pellegrino, third grader at G.W. Stout Elementary for placing first overall in the school’s science fair. Her project, “Lead in Our Water” was selected among over 100 entries by a panel of judges that included community members, WNMU faculty and administration, and G.W. Stout Elementary teachers.
Earlier this morning, USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner joined new homeowners in a groundbreaking event to begin construction on their homes in Deming. The groundbreaking event was held in conjunction with the National Homeownership Month celebration here in New Mexico and across the nation during the month of June.
The 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War will be commemorated on June 18th at the Santa Fe Veterans Memorial. A nationwide initiative was issued by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in 2008 to honor America’s Vietnam War veterans, and to also commemorate the 50th anniversary of our country’s involvement in the war which lasted from November 1955 to May 15th 1975. A 2012 Presidential Proclamation extended the commemoration through Veteran’s Day, 2025.
Eleven hundred athletes all 50 years and older from all over New Mexico will be in Roswell to compete in the Annual Summer Games in 27 individual sports. Volunteer sport coordinators from both in and outside of Roswell are on board to manage and oversee the various tournaments during the New Mexico Senior Olympics that will be held next month. New Mexico Senior Olympics is the event producers of the largest multi-sporting event in the State of New Mexico for active older adults.
US Senator Tom Udall and Senate Democrats announced a new legislative package and campaign to reform government to ensure it works for all Americans, not just special interests and a few at the top. The package includes Udall’s constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and his legislation to overhaul the dysfunctional Federal Election Commission. Udall will be the lead cosponsor of the legislation, which will be formally introduced next week.
