The team at Silver Radio/SkyWest Media wants wish everyone a very happy and safe Independence Day! While you enjoy this July 4th of July with parades, local events, fireworks and BBQ’s, here are some interesting facts about our nation’s Independence celebration:

On July 2nd, 1776, a letter was drafted to Britain’s King George explaining why the Continental Congress voted to declare America’s independence. It was on July 4th that the final wording of the declaration was ratified.

The first Independence Day was celebrated on July 8th, 1776, in Philadelphia and the official signing of the Declaration of Independence took place on August 2nd.

The 13 stars on the original American flag were in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal.

The White House celebrated Independence Day for the first time in 1801.

Almost 100 years after the Declaration of Independence, in 1870, July the 4th was made an official holiday by Congress.

Fireworks have been a major part of Independence Day celebrations. The first celebration, held in Philadelphia on July 4th 1777, was taking place during the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, and the citizens came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise their spirits.
