Here are some of today’s headlines:

On July 9th, the Silver City Police Department’s impound lot was broken into and a 2007 jeep inside the lot had been set on fire.  The vehicle had been impounded after a traffic stop on July  6th and the jeep had been seized. Allegedly, after search warrant issued, the police found almost 33 grams of black tar heroin, over a pound of marijuana, a crystal like substance presumed to be meth, scales, and a handgun. Yesterday, four of the five men suspected in this vehicle burning incident inside the impound lot were arrested. Arrests were made of Justin Dominquez, Jose Reyes III, John Grimes, and Mario Barragan, each charged with multiple felonies.  Chris Murillo, 37, has a warrant out for his arrest. All of the men are from Silver City.

In much brighter news, special thanks to those doing good in our world. Seven members of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard left yesterday for a five-day mission trip to Honduras for the purpose of bringing medical supplies to more than 20 villages there.  The team from Silver City, will join 65 others on this mission trip.   The group, in addition to bringing medicine, also delivers educational supplies and evangelical materials.

Yesterday, we shared news of Luna County 4-H winners at the state championship. Today we would like to share news of how Grant County 4-Hers did as well. We congratulate all 4-Hers who attended state conference. High accomplishments from Grant County this year included 2nd Place Range Management contest team of Justin Billings, Kolby Taylor, and Trent Kasten. Justin Billings was also high point individual in the state contest. Grant County’s Land Judging team received 1st, consisting of Kolby Taylor, who also highpoint individual, Justin Billings, and Trent Kasten.

If you have a kindergarten age child for this fall, the Silver Consolidated Schools is hosting a short readiness skills screening of all incoming kindergarten students that did not attend Silver Schools this past year.  You can still register your child tomorrow, Friday, July 21st from 1 to 6 in the Stout Elementary Gym.  Call 956-2150 if you have questions.

For those golfers in our listening audience, The First Annual Murray Ryan Memorial Golf Classic benefiting the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce will be held on August 26th, with a 7:30am registration, 8:30 start. Cost per player is $100. Cost of hole sponsor $75. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, prizes for closest to pin and longest drive, raffle tickets, door prizes, goodie bags, and more.
