City of Deming employees and elected officials met at the Mimbres Valley Special Events Center to build teamwork skills, train, and discuss ways to improve the community. According to the Deming Headlight, some of the items discussed were the lake at Pit Park, general street maintenance, painting of city water towers, building batting cages and the purchasing of a street sweeper and other equipment. Regarding the lake at Pit Park, it was reported that the New Mexico Game and Fish Department is scheduled to stock the lake later this year with various kinds of fish and that licensed fishing, paddle boats and a dock will be allowed in the future.
The Silver City Community Theater will be performing “Shakespeare in the Park: A Story Told in Sonnets,” during a free presentation this Saturday in Gough Park. Several local actors will present 11 of Shakespeare’s sonnets and some other familiar readings. Silver City Community Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a wide range of recurring live theater experiences and education for the community. Members of the Kiwanis Club of Silver City attended their Southwest District Convention in Phoenix Arizona over the weekend and returned with various honors and newly elected District titles. Alma Carson, co-owner of Carson Insurance Agency in Silver City, was elected to the office of Kiwanis Southwest District Vice-Governor. Alma, is a past distinguished Kiwanis Club of Silver City President and past distinguished Division 7 Lt. Governor. Mary Margaret Soule, was chosen as Kiwanian of the Year for the Southwest District for her humanitarian efforts in Silver City and at Kamp Kiwanis located in northwest New Mexico. In addition, Lori Bonomo, a Kiwanis member since 2007, was presented the honor of being a “Kiwanis Unsung Hero” for her volunteer work with youth leadership and service projects in Grant County. Kiwanis International is a global community of clubs, members and partners dedicated to improving the lives of children one community at a time. The Kiwanis Club of Silver City was charted in August of 1946. The Kiwanis Southwest District is comprised of 96 clubs located in New Mexico, Arizona, and El Paso, Texas.
