Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
Freeport-McMoRan is taking steps to resume mining operations at its Cobre Mine, enabling them to transport copper ore to its Chino operations. The proposed mine plan would include approximately 36 acres of land held by the Bureau of Land Management and require the construction of a new 3.5 mile haul road linking Chino and Cobre. Freeport had submitted an application to the Mining and Minerals Division of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department in 2015 to remove the Cobre/Continental Mine from the standby status, where it has been placed since 1999. The Proposed Action includes mining Hanover Mountain and transporting the mined material by haul truck to Chino where the existing Chino SX/EW facilities and Concentrator will be used for processing the ore. The proposed road will be located on the east side of the Fierro Valley and would cross over NM Highway 152.
