Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
During a meeting on Tuesday of the Silver Consolidated School District, information was presented by Silver High School Operational Principal Victor Oaxaca, regarding the current status and needed improvements of Silver High School. Some of the possible projects would address property drainage issues, new flooring and renovated bathrooms, improved lighting through the school, renovation of the Little Theater and general cosmetic improvements. The district will be receiving $20 million in bond money over the next 5 years with future projects being a new daycare at Opportunity High School and improvements at Harrison Schmitt Elementary.
The Santa Clara Police Department caught and arrested Christian Castaneda, 23 after being involved in a foot pursuit over the weekend Castaneda was arrested for allegedly receiving stolen property and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer. He also had a warrant out of the Santa Clara Police Department for receiving stolen property over $250 which is a third degree felony, resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer and driving while license suspended. He was transported to the Grant County Detention Center and is currently being held there. A records check showed that Castaneda has another felony, possession of a controlled substance, along with a couple of other misdemeanors that were bound over to district court in June of this year.
The Great American Duck Royalty Pageant is the signature kick-off event for the 38th annual Great American Duck Race, Aug. 24th-27th in Deming. This year’s theme is “Race the Rails,” a tribute to the history of Deming as a “Tank Town” when the railroad came through in the late 1800s. The Silver City Public Library located at 515 W. College Avenue, will be hosting a solar eclipse viewing event on Monday August 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. The public will be able to view live streaming video of the eclipse in the library meeting room and receive free solar eclipse glasses. This event will also feature space poetry readings from science fiction writers John Mayberry and EJ Randolph, followed by a discussion about the current eclipse which will appear more dramatic at 11:00 a.m. and reaching its peak around 11:45 a.m.
