Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
Two men wanted on murder charges in Ohio were arrested Friday in Doña Ana County, one of which is now charged on an open count of murder in the shooting death of 33-year-old Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez. Jesse Hanes, 38, and James Nelson, 36, were said to be traveling in a silver 1991 Lexus that had been pulled over Friday afternoon by Officer Chavez. Doña Ana County Sheriff’s detectives, who are investigating the shooting death, say Hanes allegedly shot Officer Chavez through the passenger-side window of the Lexus as Chavez approached the vehicle during the stop. A third passenger is no longer a suspect in the incident.
The Gila Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees held a special meeting on Friday to address a proposed resolution of collaboration for financing of needed capital building improvements at the facility. According to the board, the labor and delivery area is need of remodeling and the surgery and recovery areas need to be expanded. The board unanimously approved the resolution for financial support for the hospital.
The public library will be closed the morning of Friday, August 26 for staff development. The library will be open from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Public computers will be unavailable all day August 26, due to an upgrade and maintenance. Free wi-fi will be available as usual.
Campgrounds in the Quemado Lake Recreation Area including; Juniper, Pinon, El Caso, and the Cove boat ramp will not have water available until further notice. The well pump is broken. The Quemado Ranger District is working to replace the pump. All campgrounds and day use areas remain open, but recreationalists need to bring their own water.
New Mexico`s Spaceport America has hosted nearly 30 vertical rocket launches and its futurist hangar and runway are ready for tourists as all the infrastructure is in place for the next step in the commercial space race.
