Here’s a look at today’s local news:
The New Mexico National Guard donated a Vietnam-era “Duster” vehicle from the Dona Ana Range that was delivered to the Forgotten Veterans’ Memorial at Bataan Park on Fort Bayard Road. The tank described as a M42 Twin 40mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun vehicle, was delivered to the park last week and will be installed on a concrete slab. The donation was made possible by three Vietnam Veterans that are also serving as New Mexico state representatives: District 39 Representative Rodolpho “Rudy” Martinez; District 69 Representative Harry Garcia; and District 6 Representative, Eliseo Alcón.
The Alum Fire, is burning on National Forest System lands, on the Wilderness Ranger District in Grant County. It is located just south of the Grapevine Campground, and west of New Mexico Highway 15, within the boundaries of the Gila Wilderness. Helicopter survey has verified the fire at an estimated 10 acres and on both sides of the river. This fire is burning deep in the river corridor with extremely steep terrain and no safe access for wildland firefighters. The strategy remains full suppression which will be accomplished by containing and confining the fire to the area.
Last Thursday, an accidental shooting occurred at the intersection of Pope and 12th Streets in Silver City. At approximately 12:55 P.M. a male driver of a vehicle was showing a passenger his handgun and while pulling the slide on the gun, also allegedly pulled the trigger. The bullet traveled through his driver side door and continued through the passenger side door of an adjacent vehicle, striking the driver in the right leg. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment, and charges are pending regarding the man that fired the weapon.
The 40th Annual Deming Duck Race committee has chosen its theme for this year after holding a logo design competition. “Racing Through the Stars”, created by, Jerran Duty, features a space duck blasting through the galaxy and racing through the stars. The theme and logo will be used for judging the Duck Royalty Pageant and Tournament of Ducks Parade. The 40th annual Great American Duck Race will be held August 22nd through the 25th at the Luna County Courthouse Park in Deming.
