The City of Bayard will be receiving an emergency grant from the New Mexico Board of Finance with an approval from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, to fix a corroded wastewater line. Temporary patches have been administered but they no longer solve the imminent problem. The amount of the grant, $750,000 was initially applied for as a loan but was converted into a grant.
To celebrate their hard work and commitment, Cobre and Silver schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on this Friday, May 3rd. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association in collaboration with author Jarrett J. Krosoczka, of the “Lunch Lady” book series. School Lunch Hero Day is a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria. From directors, managers, parents, students, and school staff, school nutrition employees are superheroes that deserve some recognition.
Officials in Luna County are working on several revisions to the county’s animal welfare ordinance. The needed changes have been prompted by the animal negligence issues that came to light last year involving the Ruff Ruff Animal Sanctuary. Several groups and individuals have been reviewing the revised draft ordinance and comments and suggestions have been collected from animal welfare non-profits and activists. Areas of concern include: frequency of inspections based on number of animals housed at a facility; reporting structure of the county’s animal control officers; and adequate staffing and funding of the Deming Luna County Humane Society Animal Shelter.
This week, the Silver Consolidated Schools will conduct Kindergarten registration and screening for all kindergartners from 3:30 to 6:30 P.M. on Wednesday and Thursday, May 1st and 2nd at Sixth Street Elementary located at 405 West 6th Street. Kindergarten registration for Cliff Elementary School will be held this Thursday, May 2nd from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Parents of guardians must present a birth certificate and immunization records for each child. In addition, Kindergarten students must be 5 years old prior to 12:01 A.M. September 1st.
