Here’s a look at today’s headlines:
A Request for Proposal was initiated for medical and radiation oncology services for the Gila Regional Cancer Center. “We are very pleased to announce a new collaborative partnership with the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center” said Jeremiah Garcia, Chairman- GRMC Board of Trustees. “UNM will bring world-class cancer treatment to our community.” In the past, the New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants (NMOHC) /New Mexico Cancer Center from Albuquerque has been contracted to provide cancer services at the Gila Regional Cancer Center.
In other GRMC news, Gila Regional Medical Center has selected Taffy Arias as the new Chief Executive Officer for the hospital. Arias was selected out of a pool of 120 applications, and has served as CEO at a small hospital in North Carolina as well as Interim CEO and Chief Nursing Officer at Porter Health Care System in Indiana. Mrs. Arias will most likely begin her relocation to Silver City at the end of May, and interim CEO Alfredo Ontiveros will continue to manage GRMC until she has transitioned.
Around 50 people showed up at the intersection of Hermanas Grade and Pear Street to watch as officials broke ground for the new Deming Public School’s Intermediate School last Thursday. The new school will be updated and equipped with modern teaching tools to provide quality education to the students. The project will accommodate about 450 students and is expected to be completed by August 2018.
The 31st Edition of the Tour of the Gila started this morning with the Silver City to Mogollon Race. Despite construction forcing the change in the iconic uphill finish in Mogollon, the race still saw an exciting finish with a bonus finish-line sprint. Results are being tweeted as soon as they become available, and will also be posted on the newly redesigned website at TouroftheGila.com as soon as possible. Available rankings include the men’s top three: Matteo Dal-Cin, Daniel Jaramillo, and Colin Joyce; women’s top three: Katie Hall, Ruth Winder, and Sara Bergen.
