Area youth from Lordsburg, Mimbres, Gila and Silver City are helping create a large-scale outdoor mural through an Outdoor Equity Grant from the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division. The Lordsburg mural, which will be dedicated July 31, is the first of two grant-funded murals, with a second planned for City of Rocks State Park. Together, the projects will highlight connections between astronomy, culture and migration, with the Lordsburg mural focusing on the region’s history, migration routes and cultural crossroads, and the City of Rocks mural showcasing fire ecology, archaeology and the night sky.
The Grant County Water Commission is advancing plans for a regional water system serving central Grant County through partnerships with local governments and water providers. Officials are seeking $2 million from the New Mexico Unit Fund to build a water line connecting Santa Clara and Hanover, a project designed to improve long-term water reliability following repeated shortages and outages in the Hanover area. Once completed, Santa Clara will become Hanover’s water provider, strengthening the region’s water infrastructure and emergency resilience.
Grant County Housing Community Partners will host a free First-Time Homebuyer Bootcamp on Aug. 4 at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center. Presented in partnership with the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments, the Silver City Regional Association of REALTORS®, the Copper Collaborative and local housing and lending professionals, the session will guide prospective homebuyers through budgeting, loan options, pre-approval, down payment assistance, home shopping, and closing. New Mexico shoppers can save on back-to-school purchases during the state’s annual tax holiday from July 31 through Aug. 2. Participating retailers may deduct gross receipts tax (GRT) on qualifying items, including clothing and shoes, computers, computer accessories, school supplies, backpacks and handheld calculators. The annual tax holiday provides families and other New Mexicans with an opportunity to save money on essential school supplies and resources before the new school year begins.
