A federal judge has temporarily blocked the U.S. Department of Education from terminating the School-Based Mental Health Services Grant, preserving funding for programs at Silver Consolidated Schools while a lawsuit filed by 15 states, including New Mexico, moves forward. The temporary restraining order, which remains in effect through Aug. 24, protects a multiyear $5 million grant that Silver Schools has used to fund school counselors, wellness rooms and other student mental health resources.
The nonprofit organization Bridge Village, is preparing to launch an “aging in place” program in Grant County with three volunteer teams providing non-caregiving assistance and social support to adults age 60 and older. The Helping Hands team will assist with simple household tasks and minor repairs, while the Compassion team will provide phone check-ins, home visits, light household help, errands and monthly activities. Congratulations to Silver Consolidated Schools Coach Mike Castillo on his induction into the 2026 New Mexico High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. For more than four decades, Coach Castillo has made an impact as a teacher, coach, mentor and role model. During his 30 years at Silver High School, he helped build one of New Mexico’s most respected athletic programs, earning more than 400 basketball victories, more than 150 football victories, 28 district championships and a State Track & Field Championship. The recognition honors a lifetime dedicated to serving and inspiring young people.
