Last weekend, the Deming Police Department, in partnership with the New Mexico State Police, the Luna County Health Council, and the Coalition Against Teens Using Substances Luna County, successfully hosted the National Drug Take Back Event. Held in both Deming and Columbus, the collaborative effort resulted in the collection of 109.45 pounds of unused or expired medications. This initiative plays a critical role in preventing the misuse of prescription drugs by ensuring they are safely disposed of and kept out of the hands of individuals for whom they are not prescribed.

Single Socks has announced the opening of its grant application process for nonprofit organizations and local governmental agencies engaged in anti-hunger efforts within Grant County. To be eligible for funding, applicants must demonstrate that at least 20% of their total monetary and food support comes from sources other than Single Socks. La Plata Middle School proudly recognized the achievements of its students during the recent National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony. This year, 20 seventh-grade students and 17 eighth-grade students were honored with induction into the prestigious organization. Eligibility for this distinction required students to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher, along with consistently demonstrating outstanding character, behavior, dedication and leadership. Congratulations to all the students for this outstanding achievement.
At a Special Meeting held earlier this month, the Town of Bayard Council approved several key projects aimed at improving public infrastructure and safety. Among the approved items were video surveillance and access control upgrades for the public safety building and community center, which will be carried out by APIC Solutions. Additionally, the council approved a cement project at the Little League field, as well as improvements to the community center parking lot, including the installation of an ADA-compliant ramp and enhanced drainage systems.
