Gila Trails Info has reported continued trail restoration work in the region, including the reopening of more than a mile of the East Railroad Trail (#130), which has been cleared and improved for recreational access from the Railroad Campground. Additional maintenance has also been completed on the Mogollon Creek Trail (#153) and Rain Creek Trail (#189), including brushing, log removal, tread repair, and drainage improvements. The work enhances trail conditions and improves access to scenic natural features such as flowing water, rock formations, and surrounding views.
The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services will host a Mobile Outreach Event on May 19th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center. The event is designed to help veterans and their families access federal and state benefits, including assistance with applications and guidance on health care, pensions and education services. Veterans seeking assistance are encouraged to bring a DD-214 or other proof of military service, a valid photo ID, and any relevant VA letters or supporting medical, financial or service-related documents.
Ten creative businesses across New Mexico will share nearly $245,000 in state grant funding designed to help strengthen operations, expand outreach and support long-term growth. The Business Development and Expansion Grants, awarded by the Economic Development Department’s New Mexico Creative Industries Division, represent the second round of awards for fiscal year 2026 to support businesses that use design, culture, crafts and innovation to create economic value. In Silver City, Light Art Space was awarded $24,593 to install a new HVAC system that will allow the organization to offer year-round workshops, lectures and exhibitions.

Early voting is continuing through May 30, giving residents across southwest New Mexico an opportunity to make their voices heard before Election Day. Beginning May 16, additional early voting locations will open in Grant and Luna counties, making voting even more accessible for local communities. In Grant County, voters can cast their ballots at the Bayard Community Center Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., while Luna County residents can vote at the Mimbres Valley Learning Center Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
