The New Mexico Department of Health issued a COVID-19 update for Tuesday December 21st consisting of 733 new cases statewide with a decreased 7-day positivity rate of 9.4% down from 9.5%. Locally, new COVID cases were reported as follows: Grant County with 13 new cases; Luna County with 6 new cases; and Hidalgo County and Catron County with no new reported cases.

The Silver City Police Department gifted 70 new children’s winter coats to six schools in the Silver Consolidated School District in addition to El Refugio which operates the Casa Carmel Shelter for adults and children dealing with domestic violence. According to a news release, most of the coats were paid for by officers who donated $30 each for opportunity to participate in “No Shave November” that was extended into December. The raised funds were matched by the Silver City Police Officers Association in addition to some of the coats being donated by members of the community.

Students at Cliff Elementary participated in their annual Spelling Bee earlier this month with the top three spellers from each 4th, 5th, and 6th grade competing for the title of school Spelling Bee champion. Sixth graders Brooklyn Bird and Cheyenne Jameson tied for 3rd place; fourth grader Easton Bradberry placed second; and fifth grader Baron Bradberry placed first and was named school champion. Baron will now compete in the regional Spelling Bee in El Paso in 2022.
