The Dream Makers Club, a program that brings students and community members together to learn about health careers, have celebrated the graduation of local middle school students from Aldo Leopold Charter School and La Plata Middle School. The students had an opportunity to visit with veterinarians, toured research labs at UNM and climbed into a “Native Air” medical helicopter. The Dream Makers Clubs are sponsored through a partnership with the UNM Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and FORWARD New Mexico Area Health Education Center, a program of the Center for Health Innovation which serves the southwest region of New Mexico. Dream Makers Club is offered at no-cost to students at participating schools. Aldo Leopold Charter School Dream Makers graduates include Aaliyah Arellano, Jasper Bingham, Amelia Ellis, Joshua Estrada, James Galindo, Makiah Granadino, Kenyon Grant, Joshua Rios, Isabella Wacondo, Josephine Khera, Yevannette Dobson, Angie Arrellano, Lily Myers, Kyleigh Oakes, Emily Riggs, Maya Reeves and Yureau Rice. La Plata Middle School Dream Makers graduates included Cierra Benavidez, Alina Ortiz, Deziraye Salgado and Avery Wenzel.

Construction of a new Silver City welcome sign has begun along Highway 180 East entering the town. The sign on a red brick base will say, Bienvenidos – Silver City Welcomes You. The sign will be lit with solar powered lighting. There will be two additional signs erected in the future, one on the other end of U.S 180 coming in from Cliff and another on Highway 90 coming in from Lordsburg.

The Deming City Council has officially proclaimed this week, May 6 through 11 as “National Economic Development Week.” All week the City of Deming will celebrate the contributions of positive economic development and explain the role of the profession in the local community. Goals include high employment, inflation control, sustainable growth, and providing medical access to the impoverished. National Economic Development Week was created by the International Economic Development Council, the largest professional membership organization for economic developers.
