U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a man that was being sought for charges involving a sexual offense against a child in Otero County. Customs officers made the apprehension shortly after 8 a.m. at the Columbus Port of Entry. Angel Jesus Esquivel, 25 years of age, entered the port from Mexico driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Officers checked his documents during their inspection and received an alert for an active warrant. Esquivel was taken into custody and turned over to Luna County Sheriff’s deputies.

The New Mexico Department of Health reports uncontrolled asthma leads to nearly 8,000 emergency department visits every year, according to data collected and analyzed by the NMDOH Epidemiology and Response Division. During this month which is recognized as National Asthma Awareness Month, the NMDOH urges New Mexicans to learn about asthma control and the variety of approaches NMDOH and its partners deliver to help improve and sustain asthma control services throughout the state. The New Mexico Asthma Control Program develops strategies with communities and health systems to improve and expand the reach of comprehensive asthma control services. In addition, the New Mexico Environmental Public Health Tracking Program provides searchable data for asthma and air quality and health education. The 2019 Tour of the Gila Citizen’s Road Race took place on Sunday beginning at Camp Thunderbird in the Mimbres Valley. The course offers intense climbing while traveling through the Gila National Forest. This year, the field was comprised of all male riders. The overall champion and Youth Champion was won by nine-year old, Damiano Rivera de Rosales, with a time of 1:48:05. First Place Adult went to Ignacio Rivera de Rosales; Second Place Adult, to Justin Thurner; and Third Place Adult to Carlos Alarcon.  The race ended in the village of Pinos Altos where participants watched the finishes of the Gila Monster Road Race that determined the winners of each category of the Tour of the Gila.

Tonight, Grant County has scheduled a “Visioning Session” to receive input on the reuse of the Old Detention Center located near the Grant County Courthouse. The meeting will be held from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center located at 3031 Highway 180 East in Silver City. The session will consist of an overview followed by a group workshop and question and answer period. All members of the public are welcome.
