First in our news is an update on the Hummingbird Fire: The Hummingbird Fire, which began April 20 about 15 miles east of Glenwood, remains at zero percent containment as of April 29, with continued activity driven by dry, breezy conditions. Fire growth has been reported in Iron Creek and above the South Fork of Willow Creek, while crews worked overnight to protect structures in the Willow Creek Subdivision and secure spot fires. Firefighters are continuing containment efforts along the western and northeastern perimeters, supported by aircraft and existing fire lines, with structure protection remaining a priority. Energy Transfer recently hosted an open house to inform residents about its proposed Desert Southwest Transwestern Pipeline Expansion, which would extend the existing Transwestern Pipeline by approximately 520 miles across Doña Ana, Grant, Hidalgo and Luna counties, transporting natural gas from the Permian Basin primarily for power generation. Following completion of surveys, a detailed project design will be submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for review, including a public comment period focused on potential environmental impacts. If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2028, with completion anticipated by the end of 2029.

Beginning May 1, the New Mexico Health Care Authority will expand access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment and Training (SNAP E&T) program, allowing eligible participants to access free job training, work experience and career support without risking their benefits. The program offers up to 39 hours per month of credit toward SNAP work requirements and pairs participants with case managers to explore career options, build skills and address barriers to employment. Services include job search training, work-based learning, pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and internships, all aimed at helping individuals achieve stable employment while maintaining food assistance.
