The Gila Community Foundation has announced the opening of the Spring 2026 Southline Grant Cycle, offering funding opportunities for organizations addressing critical needs across Southwest New Mexico. The competitive program will support projects benefiting Grant, Hidalgo and Luna counties, with funding priorities determined by the Southline Advisory Committee based on community needs and the strength of applications. Applications are due by May 15 and may be submitted through the website

The Bayard City Council approved Stage 1 fire restrictions during its regular meeting, aligning with regional drought measures and allowing for removal if conditions improve. The council also approved concept and design work for the Mine Mill Museum and supported a funding application for street survey and design projects with matching funds for the Fiscal Year 2027 Transportation Project Fund. Additionally, members authorized a Colonias Infrastructure Fund loan and grant agreement for sewer improvements at the Oak Street lift station, with construction expected to begin in early July.

The Village of Columbus has announced that New Mexico State Parks is in the process of updating the management plan for Pancho Villa State Park and is seeking input from community members. The update will guide future improvements, operations, and long-term priorities for the park. Survey responses will help identify community interests, concerns, and desired amenities to ensure the plan reflects local and visitor needs. Grant County veterinarian Dr. John Wenzel was recently honored for decades of service supporting agriculture, rural communities, and the state’s livestock emergency response system. He was recognized for his work as both an extension and private practice veterinarian, as well as his leadership and long-standing contributions to the New Mexico Agriculture Livestock Incident Response Team since its founding in 2006. The Secretary’s Agriculture Legacy Award was presented during the organization’s conference, marking its 20th anniversary. Congratulations to Dr. Wenzel on this amazing accomplishment.
