Continental Divide Trail Coalition has their 2021 Virtual Trail Days underway. At 6pm this evening you can participate on  “Stories from the Trail—a Long Distance Traveler panel with Q&A.  Western New Mexico University has announced their Honorary DoctoratesFormer Regent Chair Jerry A. Walz and Former Senator John Arthur Smith will be conferred their honorary doctorates along with the more than 250 graduates making up the Western New Mexico University class of 2021. The ceremony will be May 7, at 2 p.m. The event will be live streamed on Facebook and wnmu.edu. Updates and additional information are available at commencement.wnmu.edu.

The New Mexico Resiliency Alliance, in partnership with New Mexico MainStreet (NMMS) and the McCune Charitable Foundation, awarded ten Resilient Communities Fund Grants to NMMS affiliated districts for community and economic development projects. In our listening area, we have had two grants awarded. Silver City MainStreet is being awarded a grant from small business assistance programs. Deming Luna County MainStreet for four continuous façade improvement projects. Projects will be completed by December 2021.Awarded projects have a clear and stated impact for new, innovative, or ongoing efforts to mediate the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and/or economic recovery efforts.

The Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District has tested the water system at the Dipping Vat Campground, and potable water is now available for the season. The Dipping Vat Campground is first-come/first-serve and has a small $5.00 amenity fee. The Gila National Forest has a 14-day stay limit, and currently the forest is in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. You may have campfires in the Forest Service provided fire pits. Remember to drown your campfire dead out, and do not leave it unattended.

New Mexico has launched a Safe Promise Campaign. Especially now that most counties are in turquoise, with the new metric system, it is important to still remain vigilant in safe practices.  To learn more and to make your COVID Safe Promise go to nm safe promise dot org.

Give Grandly is happening this Saturday.  This is a great time to help your favorite local non-profits. This is a day of giving, with some donations being matched. Make you contribution go farther this way and help our non-profits come out of this pandemic. Over the past seven years, local donations and matching funds have totaled more than $900,000.  Last year, almost $222,000 was raised.
