The Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District currently has one temporary additional fuelwood and waste log area available on the district. According to a release, the material was derived from a Wildland Urban Interface thinning and restoration project implemented through a Collaborative Forest Restoration Project to improve forest health, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce hazardous fuels in the Gatton’s Park area. The wood is waste product and is all ponderosa pine and the logs are approximately 30 feet long and can be bucked up into smaller loads. The wood is located at the junction of NM Hwy 35 and FSR 4078U across the highway from Terry Canyon.  This is the entrance to the Celebration dispersed camping area. This ponderosa pine is free and is available on a first-come/first-serve basis. You must be able to load this yourself.

Western New Mexico University will be holding a hybrid commencement ceremony this Friday, May 7th, giving students the option of participating virtually or in person. The limited capacity ceremony will take place outdoors at Ben Altamirano Stadium. Students opting to participate in the Spring 2021 ceremony in person will be allowed to invite four people to be admitted into the stadium. According to a release, “WNMU will be enforcing current public health orders and university protocols, requiring masks for everyone at all times and painting stadium seating areas to best promote social distancing.” In addition, graduates participating virtually will be spotlighted on a large screen in stadium. The recipient of the Annual 4-H Baking Scholarship was announced and awarded a $500 scholarship. Brye Baptiste, a senior and class of 2021 valedictorian from Cliff High School was chosen for the scholarship this year. He is a 4-H member in good standing with the Spurs 4-H Club and will be attending NMSU this Fall. Brye has served as 4-H Vice President for three years, in addition to serving as Treasurer and Secretary. Silver City Radio congratulations Brye Baptiste.
