In Gila National Forest news, at the time of this report today, the Black Fire has covered 191,459 acres with 13% containment. The U.S. Forest Service Gila National Forest is reminding the public that Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect. When outdoors, you may use stoves or grills equipped with a shut-off valve and fueled by petroleum but no open fires, even in recreation sites or campgrounds. In addition, the Gomez Peak pavilion as well as the group sites located within Little Walnut picnic area are also restricting open fires. For the most current information on the Black Fire, call 575-249-1264 from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M.

In further Gila National Forest news, the deadline for Fall 2022 Gila National Forest outfitter Guides Special Use Permits is June 1st. Applications will not be accepted after this date. Contact your appropriate ranger district to start the application process.

The Lordsburg City Council unanimously voted to name the Lordsburg Municipal Pool after longtime manager, Fred La Marca. Mr. La Marca managed the city-owned pool for 50 years, starting in 1966 and futher provided the community with the opportunity to learn safe water skills for generations of swimmers. The Lordsburg Municipal Swimming Pool is scheduled for open for the summer season on Monday, June 6th.

Memorial Day will be observed with a ceremony at Fort Bayard National Cemetery this Monday at 10:00 A.M. The event will be presented by Marine Corps League Gaffney-Oglesby Detachment 1328. Some features of the ceremony will include musical arrangements from the Hi-Lo Silvers, a reading of “In Flanders Field”, the presentation of wreaths, and a keynote message from State Representative Luis Terrazas. In Deming, there will be a ceremony at Mountain View Cemetery at 11:00 A.M. followed by a luncheon for attendees by American Legion Bataan Post 0004 Auxiliary Unit at 619 West Spruce Street in Deming.
