In Gila National Forest news, at the time of this report today, the Black Fire has covered 179,593 acres with 13% containment. In addition, the U.S. Forest Service Gila National Forest has amended the Stage 2 Fire Restriction Order which was implemented on May 17th. In the amended order, “any open flame, including camp stoves and flammable gel canisters, is now prohibited. Additionally, only generators with spark arrestors within a three-foot cleared diameter can be operated. All previous restrictions apply. The Grant County Planning Department is holding a public meeting to inform interested parties on past Community Development Block Grant program activities and to receive public input on community development needs and suggestions for future CDBG projects. The program assists communities in providing essential facilities, decent housing for residents, promoting economic development, and maintaining a suitable living environment. The State of New Mexico approximates an annual appropriation of $11,000,000 to be distributed statewide on a competitive basis. The public meeting is scheduled for June 6th at 10:00 A.M. in the Grant County Planning Department located at 1400 Highway 180 East in Silver City. For more information, contact Priscilla Shoup.

Deming residents can remember and honor this Memorial Day in Deming with a Memorial Day Ceremony presented by the American Legion on Monday, May 30th, 11:00 A.M. at Mountain View Cemetery, 3410 East Pine Street. Following the ceremony, the American Legion Bataan Post 0004 Auxiliary Unit will have a luncheon for attendees of the ceremony at 619 West Spruce Street in Deming.
