The New Mexico Department of Health along with the Gila National Forest Service have closed NM 152 the “Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway” beginning today due to the Drummond Fire near Emory Pass. The roadway will be closed at milepost 28, “Iron Creek Campground” to milepost 40 at Kingston. Detours will be in place on NM 152 to NM 61 and US 180 or NM 152 to NM 27 and to NM 26 “Hatch Highway.”  The closure is expected to last until this Saturday, May 29th. This closure is to allow firefighters to remove dead trees and brush without risk of harming passing motorists as well as firefighters working along the road and is expected to last until this Saturday, May 29th. The New Mexico Department of Health has reported that 64.4 percent of New Mexicans ages 16 and up have received at least one dose of the COVD-19 vaccine, amounting to 1,082,567 residents. Other state data reveals that 54.2 percent of New Mexicans have completed their 2 shot series. The percentages of local residents fully vaccinated by county are as follows:

  • Grant County at 55.9%
  • Luna County at 51.6%
  • Hidalgo County at 45.5%
  • Catron County at 35.2%

In addition, HMS has opened two COVID-19 Community Clinics where the public can walk-in with no appointment to receive a COVID vaccine or testing. The Grant County clinic is located at 1304 East 32nd Street and the Hidalgo County Community Clinic is located at 109 Poplar Street in Lordsburg. Volunteers are needed to prepare for Memorial Day by placing flags on all the graves at Fort Bayard National Cemetery on tomorrow at 8:00 A.M. Participants are asked to follow state COVID-19 guidelines and if  possible to bring a hammer and a piece of rebar or other implement to make a hole in the ground for each flag. In addition, due to COVID restrictions, this year there will be no formal ceremony on Memorial Day.
