The Silver City Gospel Mission, in collaboration with Hunger Free America, is offering the VISTA Program for young adults this summer. The program will involve activities such as  nurturing the community garden, actively supporting local food pantries, and engaging in various hunger-alleviation initiatives. There will be two ten week programs, the first will run from June 12th to August 20th and the second from June 20th to August 28th. Applicants must be 18 years or older and must apply by May 26th. We want to take a minute to recognize Senior Chief Petty Officer Coley Blount, a native of Glenwood, New Mexico, who is currently serving in Japan aboard a forward-deployed U.S. Navy warship. Mr. Blount grew up in Glenwood and graduated from Cliff High School in 2005.  As a member of the Navy, Officer Blount is part of a world-class organization focused on strengthening partnerships, increasing competitive warfighting capabilities and sustaining combat-ready forces in support of the National Defense Strategy. The skills and values he learned from growing up in Glenwood have not only helped him succeed in life but also in the Navy. 

American Legion Battan Post 0004 of Deming will be hosting a Memorial Day Ceremony on May 29th. The event will have Deming High School JROTC Wildcats and guest speaker New Mexico District 32 Representative, Jenifer Jones. The event will take place at 11:00a.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery. This ceremony  is free and open to the public. 

Congratulations to the Fabulous Bee students of R.V. Taylor Elementary School in Lordsburg. Eleven elementary students were recently recognized for not only their academic achievement, but also for their kind and positive attitude and behavior toward others.

The Taxation and Revenue Department will be sending out tax rebate checks that were approved in the 2023 legislative session. The checks should be going to individual bank accounts on June 16th. Single filers will be getting $500 and joint filers will be getting $1000. 

A BIG Thank you to all who came out and made the Armed Forces Day celebration at Bataan Memorial Park a great success. The event featured many speakers and members of the Marine Corps League and Vietnam Veterans of America. Many families and community members came out to celebrate and give thanks to all the men and women who have sacrificed and given their service to our nation.
