The Independence Day Parade and Freedom Festival is held this Saturday, July 3rd on Gough Park and Downtown Silver City. This All-Day-Into-the-Evening event is hosted by the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce and PNM. The parade starts at 10:00 A.M. at 12th Street and Pope across from Gough Park and travel down Pope, Street, turn left on College Street, right at the light onto Hudson, travel west, then turn right onto Broadway, and follow up the street ending at the back parking lot of the Grant County Courthouse. The parade theme is “Honoring Our Heroes” with a collective of Parade Marshals, each representing a sector. The Grand Marshal is Dan McBride, a WWII Veteran and the only surviving member of the 101st Airborne Divisions’ 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. Jeff Fell, will represent the First Responders as the Assistant Fire Chief and Emergency Manager for the town of Silver City. In addition, Margaret Diaz, Nurse Manager for the Department of Health Public offices in Grant and Hidalgo counties, and Lesliette Quesada, a teacher with Silver Schools, will also be honored.

The Bureau of Land Management, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish has releases updates to their popular hunting and recreation mobile mapping system. The program offers free digital maps of big game hunting units and recreational opportunities on public lands. The maps provide up-to-date spatial information throughout the state to help users navigate public lands and allows users to store maps on their mobile devices and access them regardless of cellular coverage.  The free Carry-Map application for iOS and Android devices is available at the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The information is also available for download and use on Windows computers. Users who need help downloading or using the app, can visit: https://blm.gov/nm/huntingmaps.

Trash collection in the Town of Silver City will be on a regular schedule the week of July 5th through July 9th. There will be no holiday delay in service. The Universal Waste Systems Customer Service office will be closed on July 5th and reopening at 8 a.m. on July 6th.
