The New Mexico Department of Health is reminding residents that there are more ways to treat COVID-19 including oral treatments for high risk individuals who test positive. Early treatment of COVID-19 can reduce the risk of hospitalization and death by 88% according to health officials. The Deming Schools Transportation Department has informed parents of some changes regarding students and school bus travel. Due to school starting in mid-July during high temperatures, students are now allowed to take water bottles on the bus until Friday, September 2nd. In addition, bus drivers will have windows down to help air circulate through the bus to keep temperatures as low as possible. Nikolas Trujillo, a Cobre High School student has received a Tier One scholarship to Western New Mexico University for his exemplary participation at the Teen Academy of Health Sciences , a three week academy focusing on possible careers in health care hosted by the Frontier and Rural Workforce Development New Mexico Area Health Education. The free summer academy offers students the opportunity to study up on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, helping them excel on college entrance exams. The Gough Park Neighborhood Orchard, located at the corner of 11th and Main Street in Silver City, needs volunteers to clean up the area. This Sunday, July 24th, Asher Gelbart, has organized a “Clean Up Day” at the orchard from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Volunteers will be clearing pathways and wrangling native plants that have ventured into the walkways. Bring tools, water, sunscreen, and a hat to lend a hand.
