In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day this coming Monday, January 17th, Western New Mexico University is holding a program in Light Hall Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. themed “A Commitment to Change.” The program features a keynote speech from Silver Consolidated School District Superintendent Will Hawkins, includes remarks by WNMU students, the presentation of the 2022 WNMU/Grant County Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award, and concludes with the screening of Martin Luther King Jr.’s final speech known as “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.” Others will be taking part in the program including, WNMU Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Dr. Isaac Brundage, WNMU Housing Hall Director Alfonso Wilson, WNMU Student Leadership Coordinator Ashley Templeton, and WNMU Assistant Dean of Student Life & Development Jessica Morales.

Members of the public can learn how to save a life with free Narcan Training sponsored by the Hidalgo County Health Council and the Youth Substance Awareness and Prevention Coalition of Grant County. Narcan is a life-saving drug that can temporarily reverses an opioid overdose. The free training will be offered online on Thursday, February 3rd from 100:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Through a partnership between the Town of Silver City and the Silver City Watershed Keepers, the anti-litter program Pick It Up – Toss No Mas will hold its next Community Trash Cleanup on Saturday, January 22nd from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in the parking lot at Gough Park. The Community Trash Cleanup brings volunteers together to help make Silver City a clean and beautiful place to live by keeping local roadways and waterways litter free. Volunteers can pick up a free t-shirt while supplies last, trash bags, gloves, trash pickers and snacks starting at 9:00 am in the parking lot on West 12th Street on the south side of Gough Park.
