At the time of compiling this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced a total of 112,950 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases statewide, an increase of 1,759 new cases. In addition, COVID-19 cases recorded locally are as follows: Grant County increased 10 new cases for a total of 590 positive cases; Luna County increased 11 new cases for a total of 2,100 positive cases; Hidalgo County increased 6 new cases for a total 204 total positive cases; and Catron County increased 1 new case 51 positive cases. Statewide, there are 917 COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has closed the gates located on NM 159 (Bursum Road) for seasonal purposes. The lower gate at milepost 12.3 and the upper gate located at milepost 22.6 will be CLOSED due to expected winter weather conditions making the roadway impassable. The traveling public is asked to use US 180 to NM 12 (Reserve) to NM 435 (Reserve Beaverhead Road) for access into Willow Creek, Snow Lake, and the Gila National Forrest.

The Southwest Women’s Fiber Art Collective, Silver City Mainstreet, and the Murray Ryan Visitor Center have collaborated to create the “Need a Hat- Take a Hat” program. According to a release, Susan Allen, a member of both groups, organized area knitters to make hats for people who may need them this winter. The hats have been placed on a tree in front of the Murray Ryan Visitor Center. Individuals needing a war hat are welcome to choose one from the tree. In addition, if anyone who like to donate a hat, please leave it in the hat collection box in front of the Visitor Center.
