There is a Gila Wild and Scenic Rivers of Opportunity Conference hosted by the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance and local community members scheduled in Silver City October 7th through the 9th. There will be several panel discussions along with assorted local outdoor field trips. Space is limited to the event and individuals can learn more and register by visiting the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance Facebook page.

It is that time of year again! Schools are going back in session and the Silver City Police Department is reminding everyone to drive safely and watch out for children walking to and from school. Some may be riding bicycles or walking, so please keep an eye out for all students. Some helpful reminders are: be mindful of all crosswalks in the Silver School District and do not drop off children except in designated areas set forth by the school your children are attending; obey the speed limit and all other traffic laws while in school zones; be mindful of school buses in pickup and drop off locations; and be sure to stop and do not attempt to pass school buses.

The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is looking for a volunteer camp host beginning September 15th. The Silver City Ranger District host would be stationed at Gomez Peak and Little Walnut day use areas. Some of the expected duties include, opening and closing the Little Walnut Gate, verifying group reservations for the three group picnic sites, litter collection, cleaning and maintain site facilities, communication with the public regarding rules, area information, and trip orientation. Amenities provided include a pull-through campsite, water, electricity, phone, sewer, and propane.  A four month to one-year commitment is most desirable.
