Grant County officials are notifying residents that a horse in the Mimbres area tested positive for New World screwworm on September 17. State and federal officials are expanding surveillance and fly-trapping around the area to determine whether the pest has spread. A 12.4-mile infested zone has been established, where animals must be inspected before being moved. Animal owners are encouraged to watch for wounds that do not heal, maggots, foul odors or unusual irritation and to contact a veterinarian if they suspect an infestation. A community town hall is scheduled for this evening, September 21 at 5 p.m. at the Mimbres Round Up Lodge.
The Bayard City Council recently received an update on plans to transform the former Mine Mill Local 890 Union Hall into a mining and labor-history museum. Stantec architects presented a revised renovation approach that focuses on essential repairs and life-safety improvements while preserving the building’s historic murals. Bayard completed a master plan in 2024 and has since secured $100,000 for design work. Stantec is expected to return with a cost estimate, with the revised approach potentially allowing the museum to open sooner than originally planned.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service plans to conduct a 205-acre prescribed burn near Pinos Altos from September 23rd through the 25th, weather permitting. The burn is located about a quarter-mile north of Pinos Altos near Bear Creek Road and NM Highway 15. The project is intended to reduce wildfire fuels, improve forest health and wildlife habitat, and help protect nearby communities. Fire crews will monitor the area after ignition to ensure the burn remains under control.

Western New Mexico University professors and students are teaming up with local naturalists for the new Southwestern New Mexico Bird Survey. The project conducts monthly bird counts at seven locations across the region, covering a variety of habitats and elevations. The project, launched by WNMU Biology Professor William Norris in partnership with the Bird Alliance of Southwestern New Mexico, welcomes birders of all experience levels.
