The New Mexico Department of Transportation and local law enforcement have closed NM-51 in the area of Truth or Consequences/Elephant Butte.  The road is closed due to flooding and rising waters.  Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route and proceed with caution until conditions change.

Due to large amounts of rainfall in the state, motorists are advised to check the route with the NMDOT at www.nmroads.com, or by calling 511 in New Mexico and 1-800-432-4269 out of state.

Update September 12, 2013: 4:00 pm

Due to heavy rain and rising waters throughout southern New Mexico, the NMDOT has close NM-174 from mile marker 1 to 4 on Catwalk Road in Glenwood, NM-159 in the Mogollon area, NM-211 south of Gila, and O’harra Road at NM-420/NM-476.  NM-51 in the Ash Canyon area near T or C/Elephant Butte is currently restricted to one lane, but will be closed during the overnight hours due to unsafe conditions beginning at 7 pm tonight.  NM 273- in Sunland Park from Buena Vista to Country Club Road has the right lane closed.

As heavy rain is forecast for most of southern New Mexico, motorists are advised to be prepared for slick driving conditions and the possibility of flooded roadways and low water crossings.  Please proceed with caution.
