Oct. 23-24: United States Senator Udall to Visit Socorro, Catron, Grant Counties
On Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 23-24, U.S. Senator Tom Udall will visit communities in Socorro, Catron and Grant counties to discuss STEM education, rural health care and affordable housing. Udall will also tour an area of Catron County that was seriously damaged by floods this summer.
In Socorro on Wednesday, Udall will visit New Mexico Tech, where he will meet with President Dr. Daniel H. Lopez, Vice President for Research Dr. Van Romero and staff and tour a “smart” classroom and the engineering success lab. The lab and classroom use interactive technology to keep students engaged in learning. Udall will discuss his strong support for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, which is vital to help New Mexico continue create jobs and grow its high-tech industry. Udall supported a $1.2 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, which will triple the number of student transfers from two-year colleges to N.M. Tech and Northern New Mexico College.
Later Wednesday in Catron County, Udall will visit the Catron County Medical Center, operated by Presbyterian Medical Services (PMS), where he will discuss the clinic’s work as well as his efforts to support rural health care, including telehealth strategies to improve access.
On Thursday, Udall will meet with Catron County officials to tour flood damage in Glenwood and discuss his ongoing work to request emergency assistance for New Mexico communities. He then will travel to Silver City to tour an affordable housing project, Vistas de Plata, for which he helped secure $584,400 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development as well as a $1 million grant.
