Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has appointed Dr. Neal Bowen, Ph.D. of HMS as the new director of the state’s Behavioral Health Services Division. Dr. Bowen came to Hidalgo Medical Services in 2005 where at that time HMS only had one part-time social worker. Recognizing the significant need for quality mental health care services in Hidalgo County and later in Grant County in 2008, Dr. Bowen helped to grow the HMS Behavioral Health Division to 25 current providers and an additional 11 support team members. A large portion of Bowen’s new job will be coordinating various systems for behavioral health care throughout New Mexico.

On Friday, at approximately 7:55 A.M., Bayard police officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 600 Block of Orchard Street. According to the Grant County Beat, a parked vehicle belonging to a resident of Santa Clara was shot 5 times. In addition, the officers located a dozen 9 mm cartridge cases at the scene and canvassed the area for injuries and evidence. The Bayard Police Chief Lee Alirez, is requesting for assistance from anyone in the area with security cameras, additional information, or any additional witnesses to contact BPD at 575-537-3312.

During the Luna County Board of Commissioners meeting last Thursday, four service awards were presented to local individuals. Mirna Chairez and Yolanda Ruiz were recognized for “Parents as Teacher Parent Educators.” The Luna County Parents as Teachers serves as a home-visiting program to promote early childhood development and supporting parents as caregivers. Lydia Salaiz and Sylvia Baeza, were honored for 20 years of service at the Luna County Detention Center.

The United States Census Bureau is now hiring in the community is will be holding a hiring event for the 2020 Census this Wednesday, October 16th from 8:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the New Mexico Workforce Connection located at 410 West Broadway Street in Silver City. There will be representatives available to answer questions about career opportunities and applications will be accepted.
