The following is a release from the MRAC:

The Mimbres Region Arts Council will host its Guatemalan Mercado on Saturday, March 29th, 2014 from 9:30am to 3:30pm at the MRAC/Wells Fargo Bank Gallery, 1201 North Pope Street in Silver City.

Handcrafted, one-of-a-kind items will fill the gallery space – many sell out quickly.  The sale will feature an extensive selection of handmade weavings created by Guatemalan artisans and offered for sale by Sonia and Curt Porter – longtime vendors of Guatemalan textiles and supporters of MRAC.

Items for sale will include woven scarves and shawls, coats and vests, jewelry, backpacks and  purses, place settings and tablecloths, pants, skirts, blouses and belts, Santos, and so much more!  Prices start at just $1 and modestly go up from there.

Proceeds from the March 29 Mercado benefit both the Guatemalan artisans and the Mimbres Region Arts Council events and programming.

Faye McCalmont, MRAC Executive Director says “Some of our shoppers have been coming for several years.  They share their enthusiasm with newcomers.  there is something for everyone and the prices are so affordable.  This is a wonderful way to support these women weavers in a developing country as well as the Arts Council.”

This event is free and open to the public.  For more information, visit the MRAC offices in the Wells Fargo Building at 1201 North Pope Street in Silver City, call 575-538-2505, or visit them online at
