Opposition is organizing around a proposed data center in southern Grant County. Site Layer 1, LLC has filed notice of its intent to seek an air-quality permit for a facility about 11.8 miles west-northwest of Hachita. Residents and environmental advocates have raised questions about the project’s potential effects on water, air quality, energy use and local infrastructure. The project’s water source, cooling system and other details have not yet been publicly established. Grant County Commissioner Nancy Stephens is proposing a one-year moratorium on new data centers to give the county time to study the potential costs and benefits and develop regulations. The proposal is expected to be considered by the County Commission on September 24.
The Foundation of Youth Arts in Deming has received a $3,000 grant through the Southline Community Investment Program’s Spring 2026 grant cycle, administered by the Gila Community Foundation. The Foundation of Youth Arts provides free arts and photography education to young people in Deming and throughout Luna County, with programs designed to develop artistic skills, confidence, self-expression, teamwork and creative problem-solving.
The City of Lordsburg is notifying residents that its water system continues to exceed the drinking-water standard for fluoride. City officials say the violation is not an emergency, but advise residents, particularly families with children under nine, to consider using an alternative low-fluoride water source and to consult a dentist or doctor about fluoride exposure. The elevated levels are an ongoing issue for the Lordsburg Water Supply System, and the city has been working to replace its existing fluoride-removal system with a reverse-osmosis treatment plant.
