The lightning-caused Sacaton Fire burning in the Gila Wilderness has grown to an estimated 9,590 acres and is 17% contained as of July 8. Firefighters used a Type 1 helicopter to conduct water drops along the fire’s edge southwest of the Willow Creek Subdivision to slow its spread, while wetting rains helped moderate fire activity along the northwest perimeter between Hummingbird Saddle and Little Turkey Lake. Today, crews continued to monitor fire behavior and are prepared to begin defensive firing operations near Willow Creek if needed, while also preparing Bearwallow Lookout and contingency fire lines.

Representatives Jenifer Jones, Luis Terrazas, and Rebecca Dow, along with Senators Gabriel Ramos and Crystal Diamond Brantley, presented a combined $44,000 in discretionary New Mexico GRO funds to District 7 Little League organizations. The funding provides $10,000 each to Copper, Silver, and Deming Little Leagues, $6,000 to Lordsburg Little League, and $4,000 each to Cliff and Sierra Little Leagues. The investment recognizes the commitment of coaches, volunteers, and families while helping support youth development, teamwork, and community engagement through Little League programs throughout southwest New Mexico.

The Lordsburg City Council approved a services contract with the Lordsburg-Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce and an intergovernmental services agreement with Hidalgo County during its regular meeting. The county agreement, valued at $200,000, covers services including dispatch, EMS, and jail support while allowing the city to assist with animal control calls outside city limits. Mayor Martin Neave also recognized three local residents who recently celebrated their 100th birthdays, including Bessie Renteria, Margaret Speer, and Rudy Chavez.
