Hidalgo Medical Services (HMS) announced it has joined healthcare providers and community organizations across Southern New Mexico in an effort to strengthen diabetes prevention and care. HMS representatives participated in a recent Project ECHO partner meeting focused on improving diabetes education, early detection and access to treatment. The regional effort builds on existing HMS programs and aims to expand healthcare resources and support for rural communities, including those in Grant and Hidalgo counties.

Luna County officials are reminding drivers to properly secure vehicle loads to prevent roadside litter and traffic hazards. According to a notice distributed by the Que Linda Program and Keep Luna County Beautiful, law enforcement and code enforcement officials are enforcing state laws and local regulations covering unsecured cargo. Loose materials such as gravel, yard waste and household trash must be covered, while larger items such as furniture and appliances must be properly tied down. New Mexico law carries penalties for unsecured loads and littering that can reach $300.

A new case of New World Screwworm has been confirmed in Catron County, marking another expansion of the parasite’s presence in New Mexico. According to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, federal officials identified the latest case in cattle. In response to the growing number of detections, state animal health officials have expanded the infested zone to include all of Grant, Luna, Hidalgo, Doña Ana and Otero counties, as well as portions of Catron, Chaves and Sierra counties. While the designation does not restrict everyday activities, it does require inspections and, when necessary, treatment for animals being moved out of affected areas.
