The Pinos Altos Volunteer Fire Rescue Department is in search of volunteers to help with their central dispatch and responding units. Their goal is to have a robust crew of individuals willing to volunteer their time a few days out of the week. The Silver City Public Library has added new technology and software to their teen and children’s areas for use while visiting the library. Playaway Launchpad durable tablets by Playaway have been added and come preloaded with games. The tablets are designed with an easy to use interface and cover a range of STEM activities for different ages and skill levels. Another item added is the AWE computer, which is broken down into subject areas so kids can find what they are interested in from science, technology, engineering, art and math to Language arts. The Silver City Gospel Mission will be providing a Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings on Thursday, November 23rd from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The dinner will be served at the Silver City Gospel Mission soup kitchen and all community members are welcome. If you are interested in donating or volunteering for the dinner, please contact the Silver City Gospel Mission. 

As a reminder, The Silver City Rotary Club is still accepting applications for their 2024 Rotary Scholarship Competition. The scholarship awards are available to graduating high school seniors who are planning to attend a college or university in an academic or vocational program or who plan to attend a vocational or trade school. Students who apply for the scholarship must have a 2.5 GPA, should be able to demonstrate a commitment to their proposed field of study and should have a history of community service or leadership in the spirit of the Rotary’s motto. The Rising Writers program, run by the non-profit organization group New Mexico Writers, is giving unpublished or novice New Mexico authors a chance to spend time with an established writer in their genre. Interested individuals will get the opportunity to meet with professional author Sherman Apt Russell to share wisdom, tell stories, answer questions and offer encouragement to upcoming writers. The application process is free and on a first-come-first-serve basis and applicants must be available to meet in person on January 12th, 2024.
