The Gila National Forest is hosting a National Fire Prevention and Education Team for a two-week period to support outreach and public messaging during Stage 1 fire restrictions. The team will focus on promoting adherence to fire safety measures and protecting forest resources, while appearing at local and regional events such as Continental Divide Trail Days and the Tour of the Gila. Efforts will include collaboration with the Grant County Office of Emergency Management, local volunteer fire departments, and forest ranger districts to ensure consistent messaging is shared with both local residents and visitors. 

The New Mexico School Boards Association has announced its 2026 Excellence in Student Achievement Award recipients, recognizing individuals and organizations selected by local school boards for their contributions to improving student outcomes. A total of 68 school boards participated, selecting a record 213 recipients, including The Commons Center for Food Security and Sustainability, Freeport-McMoRan, staff at Hurley Elementary School, the Kiwanis Club of Silver City, staff at San Lorenzo Elementary School, and staff from both the Cobre Consolidated and Deming Consolidated school districts. 

The Silver City Town Council held a regular meeting during which discussion centered on ongoing “coal rolling” incidents affecting public safety and quality of life, with potential ordinances and coordination with law enforcement under consideration. Reports highlighted progress in recycling and resource recovery initiatives, while staff noted infrastructure projects, grant funding for historic building improvements, and continued financial oversight. The council also approved expenditure reports, updated development fee schedules, and established a formal reuse and recycle committee. 

In Catron County news:

Catron County officials are advising livestock producers and residents of confirmed livestock deaths attributed to Mexican Wolf activity in northern Catron County near the Catron-Cibola County line. Recent incidents, including attacks occurring within 100 to 200 yards of homes, have been reported in the Ponderosa Vista Subdivision off York Ranch Road. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor livestock closely, and to report any animals found dead from unknown causes to the Livestock Investigator at 928-521-6131.
