The Gila National Forest has announced they are seeking career-focused women to be on-call Wildland Firefighters for the 2022 fire season. The positions provide support to wildland fire operations over the summer months and can pave the way for future employment and career advancement with the Forest Service. The Women in Wildland Fire Boot Camp will be held October 4-8 the compound on the Glenwood Ranger District in Glenwood. The camp will provide comprehensive firefighting training and orientation and successful candidates will be prepared for the Work Capacity test (also known as a pack test). The deadline for applications is September 20th before 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time and selections will be made and notified by September 30th. Although the training focuses on women in wildland fire, all interested parties are encouraged and invited to attend. No previous experience is required. The New Mexico Department of Transportation is reporting difficult driving conditions and water running on NM Highway 174.  The Gila National Forest, Glenwood Ranger District is leaving the Catwalk Recreation Area (which includes the Whitewater Picnic Area and Catwalk Trail #207) open to foot traffic. Parking along the road is extremely limited, so visitors may want to reconsider their holiday weekend plans. This area is subject to flash flooding and visitors are cautioned to not enter if the area if it is flooded.   With monsoon season and predicted rain, there is a high probability of this occurring again in the future. The Carnitas Musica Y Mas event kicks off tonight at Silver City’s Gough Park with live music, food, vendors and more. A portion of the weekend event includes a spectacular Car Show with registration starting at 8:00 A.M. tomorrow morning.
