The Kiwanis Club of Silver City held a 75th Anniversary and Officer Installation Dinner last week in their club building located at 900 Silver Heights Boulevard. Kiwanis members, including students from Cobre Key Club, La Plata Middle School Builder’s Club, WNMU Circle K Club, and Faculty Advisors, gathered together to celebrate and learn more about the Kiwanis mission of community service and serving the children of the world. Outgoing Division 7 Lieutenant Governor, John Baumberger, passed the official banner over to incoming Lieutenant Governor, Dotty Pfeifer. Kiwanis officers for the 2021-22 year include, Craig Pfeifer as President, Bre Anne Springer as Vice-President, Dotty Pfeifer as Secretary, and Liz Arrey as Treasurer.  In addition, local Kiwanian, Alma Carson will serve as the Kiwanis Southwest District Governor-Elect beginning October 1st. The Southwest District is comprised of Arizona, New Mexico, and El Paso.

The City of Deming in collaboration with Adventure Vision through the management team of Hero Practice Services, provided children with eye exams and glasses. Many kids are not receiving eye care because there are not enough providers who offer appointments for children on Medicaid. This mobile program served 15 children and the group plans on returning in mid-October to serve more children that need glasses in Luna County. Parents or guardians scheduled appointments for their children by phone at 575-440-0443. Medicaid, including all Centennial Care Health Plans, and all Lion’s Club vision vouchers were accepted. Hero Management was formed in 2006 with the goal of expanding dental care access to pediatric Medicaid patients.

The Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest are joining with Silver City Mainstreet/Arts & Cultural District and the Future Forge by hosting a both at the Maker’s Market at Mainstreet Plaza on Saturday, September 25th. Participating in Make and Take activities, the local Girl Scouts will be on hand to make Good Deed Beads. The Future Forge is providing the space for the Make and Take table at the Maker’s Market, held May through October on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Main Street Plaza in downtown Silver City.
