Here’s a look at some local news brought to you by Silver City Radio.

New Mexico Department of Health officials announced yesterday an additional 2,335 COVID-19 cases statewide from Saturday October 23rd through Monday October 25th. Locally the news cases reported for this time period are as follows: Grant County with 103 new cases; Luna County with 36 new cases; Hidalgo County with 4 new cases; and Catron County with 6 new cases. In addition, sadly fifteen additional COVID-19 deaths were recorded. NMDOH officials still urge New Mexicans to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and receiving a booster when it is available to them, and maintain CDC recommended safe practices.

Several Grant County authors have been honored in the 2021 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards organized by the New Mexico Book Co-op. The recognized local authors are as follows: Alethea Eason; Kris Neri; EJ Randolph; Kate Rauner; Catalina Claussen; Doug Fine; Eve West Bessier; Bonnie Buckley Maldonado; and Marc Levesque. The number of entries in this year’s awards program was up 64.2% over 2020 and 1,676 books were considered by judges from all over the country. All books were judged by at least three judges and every book that received an average score of at least 80% was selected as a finalist.

Silver City Mainstreet has collaborated with El Grito Head Start to offer Halloween Trick or Treat fun for young children this Friday from merchants in Downtown Silver City. Thanks to the work of Brenda Tozier, Administrative Assistant, many downtown merchants will be handing out candy this Friday, October 29th starting at 9:30 A.M. The Murray Ryan Visitor Center will be one of the stops. According to a news release from Silver City Mainstreet, due to COVID last year, the children were not able to go trick or treating Downtown, but now many merchants are welcoming visits from the El Grito children for Halloween. Drivers are reminded to be on the lookout for these children in their costumes as they walk in the downtown area.
