At the time of compiling this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced 389 new cases bringing the total to 33,362 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases statewide. In addition, COVID-19 cases recorded locally are as follows: Grant County remains at 146 total cases with 58 recovered; Luna County has risen to 507 total cases with 216 recovered; Hidalgo County remains at 108 total cases with 77 recovered; and Catron County remains at 9 total cases with 5 recovered. Statewide there are currently 127 COVID-19 hospitalizations and 1,002,906 total COVID tests performed.

Western New Mexico University Cultural Affairs in conjunction with the historical Silco Theater are offering drive-in movies for the local community. On five different weekends throughout the fall, films will be projected onto a 24- by 36-foot screen on the southern wall of the WNMU Fine Arts Center Theatre for viewers in the parking lot. According to a release, all the profits from ticket and on-site concession sales will go toward restoring the Silco’s stage with a retractable screen so the theater is equipped to offer live entertainment as well as first-run feature movies. The movies will be shown in the Fine Arts Center Theatre south parking lot, with a capacity of 50 cars, opening at 7 p.m. on the evening of each showing and the movie beginning at 8:00 p.m. The kickoff will begin this Friday and Saturday, October 16th and 17th with a showing of “American Graffiti.” Tickets are sold in advance online at thesilcotheater.com.

The Gila Native Plant Society is holding a virtual Zoom meeting this Friday, October 16th at 7:00 P.M. The topic is “Reflections on a Plant Inventory of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument 2013-2020.” For the past eight years, a local team of botanists have been working on a complete inventory of the plants within the boundaries of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The public is welcome to take part in the presentation and may request an invitation to the Zoom meeting by sending an email to gilanative@gmail.com.
