There is a public meeting scheduled this evening regarding the asphalt emulsion spill that occurred on NM Highway 15 due to an overturned tanker on September 26th. The trucking company, R. Marley LLC will give a brief presentation on the status of the cleanup efforts and field questions for the public. The cleanup operation continues with a current projection of 5 to 10 more days. The public meeting this evening is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. at the Grant County Veteran’s Memorial Business and Conference Center.

Silver City MainStreet has announced the hiring of Sharla Lefkowitz-Oberg as the incoming executive director. Sharla is returning to the area with her family after living in Silver City in 2012 and 2013. According to a news release, during that time she worked for The Commons Center for Food Security and Sustainability and Silver City MainStreet. Sharla grew up in Upstate New York and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Empire State College and several certifications including a certificate in conflict resolution from Cornell University and a level 1 United States Track & Field coaching certification. Sharla will start the position remotely next month and in person in December.

Early and absentee voting started today at the Grant County Clerk’s Office and will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5: 00 P.M. and will close on Saturday November 5th. Early voting will be available at the Bayard Community Center starting on Saturday, October 22nd including Tuesday October 25th through Saturday October 29th and continuing Tuesday November 1st through Saturday November 5th from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is November 3rd. Polls are open on election day, November 8th from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Absentee ballots are due in the county Clerk’s Office by 7:00 P.M. on election day.
