The City of Deming has issued a Public Service Announcement that due to allegations posted on Facebook, the City will be contracting with an independent auditor to perform an audit on metered utilities. According to the release, Carr, Riggs, Ingram CPA’s and Advisors will perform an audit of the entire billing process including reviewing procedures for receiving meter readings and review forensic activity. After completion, the results will immediately be made available to the community.

Silver City Mainstreet announced the winners of the 2023 Lighted Christmas Parade that was held last Saturday evening in Downtown Silver City. Judges observed floats and chose winners in three separate categories. In the Commercial category, the 1st place winner was The Recreation Works, with 2nd place awarded to Freeport McMoRan, and 3rd place going to Hacienda Realty. In the Individual Category the 1st place winner was Baile Encanto, with 2nd place awarded to Tommy and Amy Castillo, and 3rd place going to the Bloomfield Family. In the Non-Profit/Civic Category, the 1st place winner went to a tie between Gila Regional Medical Center and Starlight Theater with 2nd place going to the USDA Forest Service.

With daily colder temperatures in the area, the Forest Service has reported an increase in correlated illegal firewood cutting across the Gila National Forest. They remind the public that firewood permits are required but are easy and affordable to obtain. Firewood permits cost $2.00 per cord and a minimum purchase of 10 cords is required. In addition, firewood may be cut through December 31st during daylight hours only. The permit allows the cutting and removal of all dead-and-down wood of any species and size and dead standing trees of any size may be cut except for oak and ponderosa pine.
